01 — PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS
Identify the floor before planning the installation
A product category is not an installation manual. For customer-supplied flooring, AHW normally asks for the exact product link before agreeing to the installation. If a usable link is not available, the customer can provide the full brand, flooring type, model, and color or pattern so the product can be identified.
That initial review is intentionally practical: AHW checks the product type and installation method, looks at key specifications such as overall thickness, wear layer, locking system, and attached pad where applicable, and reads the manufacturer’s installation instructions closely enough to confirm that the product fits AHW’s floating-floor scope.
Depending on the product and project, the installation plan may need information such as:
- approved floating installation method;
- locking or joining system;
- approved substrates and room applications;
- flatness requirements;
- attached or separate underlayment;
- moisture-related requirements;
- expansion and fixed-object requirements;
- maximum runs or transition rules;
- acclimation or conditioning instructions;
- coordinating trim and stair components.
If the product requires a field-flooring installation method outside AHW’s scope, that should be identified before the installation is accepted rather than improvised on installation day. Before installation begins on site, AHW also confirms that the cartons/product present match the product that was reviewed and checks the current installation instructions again for any changes or details that need confirmation.

02 — MATERIAL CONDITION
Know what arrived and whether the project has enough material
Before installation progresses, AHW visually checks the cartons for obvious damage and confirms that the material on site appears to match the product that was reviewed. Obviously damaged cartons are set aside rather than treated as usable material by default.
AHW generally plans flooring quantity at the measured project area plus a 10% material allowance. Final orders may need to round up to whole boxes. If visible shipping damage consumes a meaningful part of that planned allowance, AHW tells the customer that additional or replacement material may be needed before the installation can be completed.
When the customer purchased the flooring, the customer remains responsible for obtaining replacement or additional material, with AHW providing the project information needed to identify the shortage or damage. When AHW supplied the flooring, AHW handles the supplier-side resolution.
Product storage and conditioning are handled according to the exact instructions. AHW does not publish one universal acclimation period across every floating floor.
03 — EXISTING FLOOR & SITE
Understand what the new floor is meeting
The installation plan considers visible and known site conditions such as:
- existing floor covering;
- removal requirements;
- doors and clearances;
- baseboard, shoe molding, or other trim;
- fixed cabinetry and islands;
- appliances and access;
- transitions to adjacent surfaces;
- stairs and landings where included;
- connected-room geometry;
- occupied-home or active-renovation sequencing.
Concealed conditions remain concealed until the existing material is removed or the area is opened. The scope distinguishes visible or known conditions from concealed conditions that cannot be confirmed until the area is exposed.
04 — SUBSTRATE
The floating floor still depends on support underneath it
The substrate is considered in relation to the selected flooring product. During the initial walkthrough, obvious movement, slopes, humps, dips, damage, or moisture concerns may be noticeable, but existing flooring can hide the actual installation surface. After removal, questionable flatness areas are checked with a straightedge where needed.
When a flatness or preparation concern is found, AHW explains the condition and the available flooring-preparation options. A customer can decline some corrective work only when AHW still considers the remaining condition acceptable enough to install over. AHW may refuse to proceed when the condition is too far outside the product requirements or creates an installation risk AHW is not willing to accept, even if the customer would prefer to leave it unchanged. Known accepted conditions are documented in the project paperwork.
Moisture is not blanket-tested on every project. It is considered when the product, substrate, site conditions, or visible evidence of water/moisture makes it pertinent. Active water, unresolved moisture, or another condition outside flooring scope may need to be corrected before installation proceeds.
Within a flooring project, AHW can separately scope localized subfloor repair/replacement, additional subfloor/overlay layers where appropriate, and other limited flooring-adjacent repair when the condition fits AHW’s capabilities. Major structural repair, joist replacement, foundation work, crawl-space or mold remediation, engineering, and work that requires a licensed plumbing, electrical, or HVAC contractor remain outside ordinary flooring scope.
05 — LAYOUT
Plan the field before the first row commits the room
Layout planning considers:
- primary room dimensions;
- starting line;
- expected first- and last-row widths;
- plank direction;
- connected spaces;
- long sightlines;
- doorways;
- transitions;
- end-joint placement and repetitive patterns;
- manufacturer-specific stagger requirements.
The objective is not to force every room into one formula. It is to make the layout intentional within the geometry of the home and the rules of the flooring product.
06 — EXPANSION & MOVEMENT
Preserve the movement provisions required by the product
Floating floors are installed with product-specific movement requirements. Those can involve perimeter clearance, fixed objects, continuous run dimensions, floor area, transitions, or other conditions.
AHW does not promise one universal expansion gap, one “no-transition” whole-house layout, or one maximum run across every product.
07 — DOORWAYS
Treat a doorway as part of the layout, not a last-minute cut
Doorways combine casing, jambs, finished floor height, connected-room geometry, transition decisions, and visible sightlines.
Where appropriate to the project, normal jamb/casing undercutting is handled as the separately priced door-jamb/casing scope. AHW evaluates the actual doorway during the site walkthrough because unusual or nonstandard conditions can require a different approach or affect whether that portion of the project is accepted.
08 — INSTALLATION
Use the joining method intended for the floor
“Click-lock” is a broad description. The actual product may use an angle-lock, fold-down, tap-assisted, or other joint design.
Installation should follow the correct sequence and approved tools for that product. During the work, layout and joint engagement are checked as the field progresses rather than assuming every row will correct itself later.
The standard is not intended to become a step-by-step DIY manual. Its purpose is to show homeowners what is being considered and where the exact product and written scope control the work.
09 — TRANSITIONS & FINISHING
Finish the places where the floor changes, ends, or meets something else
Transition planning considers the adjoining surfaces, elevation, product requirements, doorway location, and the appropriate profile. Transition pieces are normally sourced by the same party supplying the flooring so compatible, coordinating material can be obtained whenever possible.
When AHW supplies the flooring, transition material is added at the actual/project-specific material cost where needed. When the customer supplies the flooring, the customer should also obtain the compatible transition pieces identified for the project. Transition installation remains separately scoped. Coordinating trim, termination points, stair components, and other finishing work are included only when they are part of the written scope.
10 — WORKSITE
Keep installation organized within the project around it
Residential flooring work often happens in an occupied home or alongside a renovation. AHW works within the written flooring scope and the access available at the site; room sequencing or coordination with other trades is handled project by project rather than promised as a universal process.
Work areas should ideally be cleared before installation begins. Furniture or appliance moving is not a standard included service, although AHW may agree to help with specific items when the project allows it. Any such handling should be addressed in the project scope rather than assumed.
AHW cleans the mess created by its installation work: the work area is swept or vacuumed as appropriate, and installation-generated trash, packaging, cutoffs, and debris are collected. Disposal or haul-away of removed flooring/material is separate unless the written estimate includes it.
11 — FINAL REVIEW
Walk the finished scope rather than ending at the last plank
AHW recommends a final walkthrough with the customer when the customer is available so the completed scope and visible installation details can be reviewed together. If the customer cannot be present, AHW can send completion photographs instead.
The review compares the planned scope with the work that was actually completed and gives the customer a clear point to raise visible questions about the finished installation.
WHAT THIS STANDARD DOES NOT PROMISE
What the standard does not promise
AHW does not use this standard to promise:
- one universal subfloor tolerance;
- one expansion-gap dimension for every floor;
- one stagger distance for every floor;
- acclimation for every product;
- routine moisture testing on every project;
- continuous installation through every doorway;
- “no transitions” in every home;
- furniture or appliance moving as a standard included service;
- baseboard removal/reinstallation unless it is included;
- floor leveling unless it is included;
- repair of every existing substrate, structural, or building condition;
- a universal completion time.
