How to Read Flooring Specifications & Installation Instructions

The color and wear layer are only part of a flooring decision. The installer also needs to know what the exact product is allowed to go over, how it connects, and what its installation instructions require.

Product-specific rule: General principles help explain the subject, but the installation instructions for the exact flooring product control its requirements.

Quick answer

Before buying flooring, an installer needs more than the color, price, thickness, and marketing name.

The exact product documents can determine:

  • whether the floor is approved for floating installation;
  • which substrates are allowed;
  • what flatness condition is required;
  • whether attached or separate underlayment is permitted;
  • moisture testing or moisture-control requirements;
  • expansion clearances;
  • transition or run-length rules;
  • acclimation or conditioning instructions;
  • room limitations;
  • stair and trim accessories;
  • and the correct joining method.

Those requirements can change the project before a single box is opened.

Start with exact product identity

“Luxury vinyl plank” is not enough.

“Laminate” is not enough.

“Engineered hardwood” is not enough.

Ideally, collect:

  • manufacturer;
  • collection;
  • product name;
  • SKU or model number;
  • product page URL;
  • specification sheet;
  • installation instructions;
  • technical documentation where relevant.

A useful product record connects the marketing product to the technical instructions that govern installation.

That prevents a common problem: having installation instructions for a similar-looking product rather than the one actually purchased.

Installation method

One of the first questions is whether the exact product is approved for the installation method you intend to use.

Engineered hardwood is a good example. Some products can be floated; others may also allow glue or staple methods; the approved options are product-specific.

  • click-lock LVP;
  • click-lock laminate;
  • floating engineered hardwood.

If the instructions call for a method outside that scope, the product may not fit the project AHW offers.

Locking or joining system

“Click-lock” describes a category of mechanical joints, not one universal sequence.

Products may use different angle, fold-down, tap, or other joining methods.

The instructions determine:

  • how the long edge engages;
  • how the end joint closes;
  • what tools are permitted;
  • whether tapping is allowed and where;
  • and what sequence should be used.

A joint method that is correct for one floor can be wrong for another.

Approved substrate

The product instructions may distinguish between:

  • plywood or OSB;
  • concrete;
  • certain existing hard surfaces;
  • below-grade or above-grade locations;
  • radiant heat systems;
  • or surfaces that are specifically prohibited.

This is why “Can LVP go over my old floor?” cannot be answered from “LVP” alone.

Flatness requirement

Look for the section describing substrate flatness, surface variation, or subfloor preparation.

The key details are usually:

  • the maximum allowed variation;
  • the distance over which it is measured;
  • and the required correction method or substrate condition.

Do not borrow a number from another brand.

Underlayment and pad

A product may have attached pad, require a separate underlayment, permit only certain products, or restrict adding another layer.

More cushion is not automatically better.

Adding an unapproved layer can change how the locking system is supported.

The decision should come from the exact product documentation, especially over concrete or where a moisture-control layer is involved.

Expansion and fixed objects

Look for instructions covering:

  • perimeter clearance;
  • walls and vertical obstructions;
  • cabinets and islands;
  • pipes or columns;
  • door frames;
  • maximum continuous dimensions;
  • transitions;
  • and large or connected spaces.

These details can determine whether the floor can run continuously through the layout you have in mind.

Moisture and conditioning

Search the instructions for:

  • substrate moisture limits or testing;
  • ambient conditions;
  • storage;
  • acclimation;
  • conditioning;
  • concrete requirements;
  • crawl-space or below-floor requirements.

Do not assume every LVP needs the same acclimation period or that every engineered-hardwood product uses the same moisture rule.

Manufacturer guidance varies, and conditions can matter.

Room and application approval

Marketing terms such as “waterproof” do not replace room-specific installation instructions.

The product documentation should answer whether the floor is approved for:

  • kitchens;
  • bathrooms;
  • basements;
  • below-grade spaces;
  • sunrooms or high-temperature areas;
  • commercial environments;
  • stairs;
  • or other special applications.

A surface claim and an installation approval are not the same question.

Transitions, trims, and accessories

A project can stall because the planks arrived but the coordinating parts did not.

Before ordering, identify whether the project needs:

  • T-molding;
  • reducers;
  • end caps;
  • stair nosing;
  • thresholds;
  • quarter round or shoe molding;
  • another manufacturer-specific profile.

Check availability before the installation date, especially for discontinued, special-order, or color-matched accessories.

Material quantity and carton coverage

The specification sheet should identify how much material is in a carton.

AHW generally plans flooring quantity at the measured project area plus a 10% planning allowance, with final orders rounded as needed to whole boxes.

The product documentation still matters because plank dimensions, carton coverage, layout, pattern, and special manufacturer recommendations can affect the final order.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

Before committing to the floor, try to answer:

  1. Can I identify the exact manufacturer, product, and model?
  2. Do I have the installation instructions?
  3. Is floating installation approved?
  4. Is my substrate type approved?
  5. Is attached pad present?
  6. Is separate underlayment allowed or required?
  7. What does the product state about flatness?
  8. What does it state about moisture?
  9. Does it require acclimation or conditioning?
  10. What expansion and transition rules apply?
  11. Is the intended room approved?
  12. Are the necessary transitions and stair parts available?
  13. How much material is in a box?
  14. Does the project geometry create a special run or doorway issue?

If several of those answers are unknown, that is useful information—not a failure.
