Quick answer
A floating floor does not need to be fastened to the subfloor, but it still depends on the surface underneath it for support. Before installation, the substrate needs to satisfy the requirements of the exact flooring product. Across manufacturer and industry guidance, recurring themes include a surface that is clean, dry, stable, in acceptable condition, and sufficiently flat for the product being installed.
That is different from saying every floor must be perfectly level.
It is also different from saying every dip, high area, soft spot, crack, or moisture concern is a flooring-preparation problem that an installer can automatically correct.
The job is to identify what the planned floor requires, compare that with the conditions that can actually be observed, and define the preparation scope honestly.
What “ready for installation” actually means
A useful way to think about substrate readiness is to separate several questions.
Is the surface stable enough for the flooring project?
The floor system beneath the new flooring needs to provide stable support. Visible deterioration, movement, damaged panels, loose sections, or other obvious concerns can change the preparation scope.
AHW can separately scope localized subfloor repair/replacement, additional subfloor/overlay layers where appropriate, and other limited flooring-adjacent repair when the condition fits AHW’s capabilities. Major structural repair, joist replacement, foundation work, engineering, or work requiring a licensed plumbing, electrical, or HVAC contractor remains outside ordinary flooring preparation.
Is it clean?
Debris, protrusions, old material, or contamination can interfere with preparation and installation. Manufacturer instructions may be more specific about what must be removed or corrected.
Are there moisture conditions that matter to this installation?
AHW does not perform blanket moisture testing on every flooring project.
Moisture becomes part of the flooring review when the selected product/substrate makes it pertinent or when visible evidence—such as active water, staining, wet material, or another obvious concern—suggests that the condition needs attention before installation proceeds.
The exact flooring instructions still control any product-specific moisture requirement. An unresolved leak, active water issue, crawl-space condition, or other building problem outside flooring scope may need the appropriate trade before the new floor is installed.
Is it flat enough?
This is one of the most misunderstood points in floating-floor work.
Manufacturers frequently specify a maximum amount of variation over a stated distance. Those numbers are product-specific. A tolerance published for one floor must not be copied onto another product simply because both are LVP or both use a click-lock joint.

Preparation is a scope, not one generic service
“Floor prep” can describe very different work.
Depending on what is actually found, preparation might include removing a localized high area, filling or flattening a low area, replacing a damaged section within flooring-preparation scope, adding an approved overlay, cleaning the surface, or addressing another condition identified in the written estimate.
Two rooms with the same square footage can need completely different preparation.
That is why AHW publishes preparation pricing separately from base installation pricing rather than hiding every possible condition inside a single square-foot number.

Flatness correction is not the same as “making the house level”
A house can slope gradually and still present a relatively flat installation surface. Another floor can be level overall but have a localized hump or depression that matters much more to the locking system.
Trying to “level” an entire house is not the default objective of floating-floor preparation.
The practical question is:
Does the installation surface meet the substrate requirements for the exact flooring product?
That keeps the discussion connected to flooring installation instead of turning a flooring estimate into an undefined structural or remodeling project.
Existing flooring changes what can be known
An important limitation is visibility.
Before removal, an installer may be able to observe:
- how the existing surface feels and behaves;
- visible damage or movement;
- obvious changes in elevation;
- accessible transitions and door clearances;
- known substrate information;
- visible moisture-related concerns.
But the existing covering can hide conditions below it. AHW may notice a questionable area during the walkthrough, but the exposed substrate is usually the point where a straightedge check can confirm whether a suspected high/low area deserves attention.
A photograph cannot prove what is under carpet, laminate, old LVP, or another finish layer. Removing the old floor may expose damage, old patches, multiple layers, moisture evidence, or construction that was not visible during the original estimate.
A responsible estimate distinguishes between known scope and concealed conditions.
Installing over an existing floor is a product decision too
Some floating products may be approved over certain existing hard surfaces when those surfaces meet the manufacturer’s conditions. Others impose limitations.
The important questions are not simply “Can LVP go over this?” or “Can laminate go over that?”
They include:
- Is the existing surface an approved substrate?
- Is it secure and in acceptable condition?
- Does added floor height create door, appliance, stair, or transition problems?
- Does the manufacturer require removal of the existing material?
- Would leaving the old floor hide a condition that needs to be addressed?
The exact instructions remain the controlling reference.
What belongs in a flooring-focused preparation review
For a floating-floor project, the preparation review should stay centered on the installation—not turn into an unrelated home inspection.
The practical checklist includes:
- Identify the exact flooring product and its instructions.
- Identify the accessible substrate or existing floor.
- Look for visible damage, movement, contamination, or other obvious concerns.
- After removal, use a straightedge on questionable flatness areas where the exposed surface can be assessed.
- Discuss recommended flooring-focused correction with the customer and document any known condition the customer elects not to correct.
- Proceed only when AHW still considers the remaining condition acceptable for the product and project.
- Consider moisture requirements or visible moisture conditions when they are pertinent.
- Review added height, doors, transitions, fixed objects, and adjoining surfaces.
- Define preparation work separately from installation.
- Flag conditions that need another trade rather than pretending flooring prep can solve everything.

A future floor may need no additional preparation, a small targeted correction, or a substantially different scope.
Questions worth asking before installation
Does my subfloor have to be perfectly level?
No universal “perfectly level” rule should be assumed. What matters for the flooring installation is whether the substrate satisfies the exact product requirements, including its flatness requirement.
Can a thick plank hide an uneven floor?
Do not treat plank thickness as permission to ignore substrate requirements. The flooring instructions still control.
Can AHW tell what is under my old floor from photos?
Photos can show visible conditions. They cannot reliably reveal concealed construction or damage beneath a covering that has not been removed.
Is every low area automatically a leveling job?
No. The condition has to be evaluated against the planned product, the surrounding floor, the required preparation method, and the project scope.
What if the condition looks structural?
AHW does not turn structural concerns into generic flooring-preparation charges. Conditions outside flooring scope may need an appropriate qualified professional.
What good preparation actually means
Good subfloor preparation is not about making dramatic claims that every floor is “perfect.”
It is about matching a real surface to a real product requirement, documenting what needs correction, and refusing to guess about what cannot yet be seen.
