Choosing a Floating Floor: LVP, Laminate, and Engineered Hardwood

LVP, laminate, and engineered hardwood can all be installed as floating floors, but they are not interchangeable.

Their surfaces, cores, moisture limitations, underlayment requirements, joint systems, and installation instructions differ. The right choice depends on the room, the look you want, how the space will be used, and the requirements of the exact product.

CLICK-LOCK LVP

Click-Lock LVP

LVP uses a vinyl-based plank construction. Many products are selected for practical maintenance and use in rooms where moisture exposure is a concern, but ‘LVP’ does not describe one universal product.

Core construction, plank thickness, attached padding, room approval, expansion requirements, and locking systems vary. We review the exact product before confirming installation.

Installation labor starts at $3.25 per square foot.

CLICK-LOCK LAMINATE

Click-Lock Laminate

Laminate uses a protective surface and printed design layer over a wood-based plank core. Its appearance, thickness, edge construction, water resistance, and underlayment requirements vary by product.

Product-specific moisture limits matter. A laminate approved for one room or type of exposure may not be approved for another.

Installation labor starts at $3.75 per square foot.

FLOATING ENGINEERED HARDWOOD

Floating Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood has a real-wood surface over a layered core. Because the visible surface is genuine wood, the color, grain, and natural variation differ from plank to plank.

Certain engineered-hardwood products are approved for floating installation. The approved method may use a mechanical locking joint or a tongue-and-groove joint assembled according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Moisture conditions, subfloor type, underlayment, expansion space, and acclimation or conditioning instructions should be reviewed before installation.

Installation labor starts at $4.50 per square foot.

PLANK CONNECTIONS

“Click-Lock” Is Not One Universal System

Click-lock is a general description for mechanically joined flooring. Manufacturers use different joint designs, names, tools, and installation sequences.

The product instructions—not the category name—determine how the planks should be assembled.

Angle-Lock Systems

One edge of the plank is held at an angle, fitted into the adjoining joint, and lowered into position. Depending on the product, the end joint may also be angled or completed through a separate approved step.

Fold-Down or Drop-Lock Systems

The long edge is usually engaged first. As the plank is lowered, the end joint locks into place.

Some systems use a flexible insert inside the end joint that moves into its locked position as the plank is folded down.

Angle-and-Tap Systems

The long edge is angled into place, while the short end is joined using the sequence and approved tapping tool specified by the manufacturer.

The plank should never be struck or forced using a generic method that conflicts with the product instructions.

Floating Tongue-and-Groove Systems

Some floating engineered-hardwood products do not use a mechanical click joint. Instead, the manufacturer may require adhesive within the tongue-and-groove joint while the assembled floor remains unattached to the subfloor.

We confirm whether the selected product uses a floating method that falls within the project scope before scheduling.

INSTALLATION SEQUENCE

Why the Joint System Matters

The joint system affects more than how two planks connect. It can influence:

  • The order in which the floor must be assembled
  • How the installation works around walls and doorways
  • Whether the product can be installed in more than one direction
  • Which tapping blocks, pull bars, or other tools are approved
  • How carefully edges and end joints must be handled
  • The time required for the layout and installation

That is one reason we ask for the manufacturer and product name before confirming the labor price.

PREPARATION

Floating Does Not Mean Preparation-Free

A floating floor is not fastened directly to the subfloor, but the surface underneath still matters.

Before installation, we look at visible flatness, cleanliness, dryness, damage, movement, and compatibility with the flooring instructions. What to Check Before Buying Flooring

Before purchasing, look for the following information:

  • Manufacturer and collection
  • Exact product or model number
  • Approved rooms and moisture limitations
  • Floating installation method
  • Locking or joint system
  • Attached pad or separate underlayment requirements
  • Subfloor and flatness requirements
  • Acclimation or conditioning instructions
  • Expansion and maximum-run requirements
  • Required transitions
  • Compatible stair and trim components
  • Recommended material overage
