Why Floating Floors Separate or Develop Gaps

A gap does not automatically prove bad material or bad installation. Joint damage, substrate support, restriction, movement, layout, or product-specific conditions can all deserve investigation.

Product-specific rule: General principles help explain the subject, but the installation instructions for the exact flooring product control its requirements.

Quick answer

When floating-floor planks repeatedly separate or develop gaps, the visible opening does not identify the cause by itself.

Possible categories can include:

  • damaged or incompletely engaged locking joints;
  • inadequate support from the substrate;
  • movement at a local low or high area;
  • the floor being restrained where it needs to move;
  • layout or installation conditions;
  • product-specific limitations;
  • or another condition that requires hands-on evaluation.

A website cannot tell you which category applies to your floor from the symptom alone.

Start by describing the gap

Useful observations include:

  • Is the gap at an end joint or long edge?
  • Is it one location or many?
  • Does it reopen after being closed?
  • Does the floor move when you step nearby?
  • Is the gap near a doorway, transition, wall, cabinet, or fixed object?
  • Did it appear soon after installation or much later?
  • Is there visible joint damage?
  • Is there moisture evidence or swelling?

Those details do not prove the cause, but they narrow what should be investigated.

Category 1: joint engagement or joint damage

Click-lock systems rely on the actual joint design staying properly engaged.

A joint may deserve inspection when:

  • an edge is chipped or visibly damaged;
  • a plank was forced together incorrectly;
  • a joint never fully seated;
  • the product was installed using the wrong joining method;
  • repeated movement has stressed the connection.

“Click-lock” is not one universal mechanism, so the exact manufacturer’s installation method matters.

Category 2: substrate support

A floating floor rests over the surface beneath it.

If a local area is outside the product’s flatness requirement, the floor can bridge or move at that location.

For some products, manufacturer guidance specifically warns that excessive subfloor variation or an overly soft support layer can stress click-lock joints over time. That makes support one category worth checking, not a universal diagnosis for every gap.

This does not mean every gap is caused by an uneven floor.

It means substrate support belongs on the inspection list—especially if the floor moves or flexes in the same area.

Category 3: the field is restrained

Floating floors generally need product-specified movement provisions.

If the field is improperly trapped by a wall, fixed object, transition detail, or other condition, stress can show up elsewhere.

Category 4: layout or installation sequence

The exact joint system can determine:

  • how rows are assembled;
  • whether tapping is allowed;
  • how end joints are closed;
  • minimum end-joint placement;
  • where transitions are required.

A floor that was installed using a generic method rather than the product instructions may deserve closer review.

Again, the symptom alone does not prove this happened.

Category 5: product or environmental conditions

Some separation problems can involve conditions specific to:

  • the flooring product;
  • temperature;
  • moisture;
  • substrate;
  • installation environment;
  • manufacturing damage.

Those categories require the exact product documents and real site observations.

Do not assume a gap automatically proves “bad flooring.”

Do not assume it automatically proves “bad installation,” either.

What should not be assumed

“The installer just needs to tap it back together.”

If a gap repeatedly returns, simply closing it may not address why it is reopening.

“The floor is waterproof, so moisture cannot be involved.”

A waterproof surface claim does not make the entire floor system or substrate immune to moisture-related conditions.

“All gaps are expansion problems.”

Restriction is one possible category. It is not the only one.

“A heavy plank cannot move.”

The weight or thickness of the product does not replace its installation requirements.

A separated plank is a symptom.

The responsible next step is to inspect the joint, support, movement, product instructions, and surrounding conditions rather than choosing one cause from a photograph.
